Asbestos in Acoustic Tile

What are acoustic tiles?

Acoustic tiles made from asbestos were widely used for much of the 20th century in homes, offices, schools and other municipal buildings. They were typically used in drop, or suspended ceilings to provide sound insulation and overall better acoustics. Acoustic tiles were suspended from a t-bar frame, allowing an open space between the tiles and ceiling that could house the building’s HVAC system.

Like most products made from asbestos, acoustic tiles containing the mineral were not used after about 1977. However, if you manufactured, installed, or repaired acoustic tiles made from asbestos, you may be at risk of developing an asbestos related disease, including mesothelioma cancer. Any action that could have caused the asbestos fibers to become airborne, such as cutting, sawing, sanding or grinding the tiles would release microscopic asbestos fibers into the air, where they can remain suspended for hours or days.

Inhaled fibers can become lodged in the mesothelium, the delicate wall of cells that line many of the body’s internal organs. Asbestos exposure has been proven to cause several types of cancer and other asbestos related diseases. Mesothelioma, or more correctly, malignant mesothelioma, is a rare but deadly form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure that affects the lungs, heart, or stomach. Asbestos also causes asbestosis, a serious and progressive disease caused by asbestos fibers scarring the lungs and eventually cutting off oxygen supply to the victim. Asbestosis and mesothelioma cancer can lie dormant for many years and decades after the asbestos exposure, and suddenly appear with little warning.

Mesothelioma law has been put in place to help mesothelioma cancer victims win the compensation they deserve.
