Asbestos in Duplex Block

What is asbestos duplex block?

Asbestos block is an insulation product that was used on hot water tanks and boiler tanks until about 1980, when asbestos products were phased out of use in the United States. Duplex block insulation is relatively easy to identify: it is a chalky material often held in place with chicken wire or metal lathe. Sometimes a plaster soaked cloth is used as final seal. Due to its chalky nature, duplex block becomes friable very easily.
Friable asbestos is a major health hazard. If inhaled or swallowed, microscopic asbestos fibers can become lodged in lungs and stomachs, first irritating and then scarring the lining. In some cases, this scarring leads to mesothelioma, a rare but usually deadly form of cancer.

Health issues related to asbestos exposure can appear many years after the exposure occurred. Often mesothelioma and other asbestos related diseases take decades to appear.
