Asbestos in Wallboard

What is asbestos wallboard?
Wallboard was one of the most common construction materials to contain asbestos. The fibrous mineral was added to cement wallboard to increase its durability, anti-corrosion, insulation and fireproofing qualities. Asbestos was the perfect cheap, durable, and easy-to-install building material during the post-World War II building boom. The sheets were large enough to quickly cover a room, and could be easily drilled, cut and otherwise shaped. Unfortunately, drilling, sanding and cutting asbestos wallboard released asbestos fibers into the air, where they could be inhaled. Airborne asbestos is easily embedded into the mesothelium, the thin lining that covers and protects most of the body’s internal organs and cavities.
Over time, embedded asbestos fibers can lead to numerous asbestos-related diseases, including asbestosis, pleural plaques, lung cancer, and mesothelioma, a rare but deadly form of cancer caused only by exposure to asbestos. Individuals who worked with asbestos wallboard are not the only ones at risk for developing malignant mesothelioma. The dust from work clothes was often inhaled by children and wives when the men returned home from the worksite as well. Sadly, there have been many mesothelioma diagnoses from secondhand asbestos exposure.
Johns-Manville, National Gypsum, and other companies that manufactured asbestos wallboard knew for decades about the grave health risks associated with their products, but kept the information hidden from their workers and the public. Mesothelioma law has developed to help mesothelioma cancer victims and help to get compensation.
