What are asbestos wicks?
For much of the last century, if something was associated with heat or flame, it was made from asbestos. Thanks to its heat and flame resistant properties, easy availability, low cost, and apparent safety benefits, asbestos was made into many thousands of products – from boiler insulation and marine panels to hair dryers and crock pots. While asbestos may have prevented countless fires and burn injuries, it was a deadly killer in its own right. Asbestos exposure has been linked definitively with many serious asbestos related diseases, including asbestosis and mesothelioma cancer.
One common product that contained asbestos was wick. The term “asbestos wick” refers to two things:

- The most common use for asbestos wick was for insulation packing for pipes and pipe systems and around boilers and furnaces.
- Lamp or candle wicks. There is some evidence that asbestos was used for lamp wicks as early as 3000 BC, but there is little evidence that of widespread use in modern times.
If you worked with asbestos wick, you might be at risk for developing mesothelioma or other asbestos related diseases.
