CertainTeed Corporation

CertainTeed Corporation is a subsidiary of industrial giant Saint Gobain and manufactures building materials such as roofing, vinyl and fiber cement siding, trim, fence, railing, decking, foundations, insulation, gypsum, ceilings, and pipe products.

From the 1930s through the 1980s, many CertainTeed products contained asbestos. Durable, unburnable and cheap, asbestos was considered a crucial ingredient for many building materials, even after manufacturers discovered the clear links between inhaling asbestos and devastating illnesses such as mesothelioma cancer in the 1930s and 40s.

Like many companies with thriving and profitable asbestos product lines, CertainTeed chose to continue to use asbestos long after they learned that the material could cause illnesses. In 2005 CertainTeed was found liable for $3.4 million in damages for failing to warn about the dangers of its products. A San Francisco jury delivered the plaintiff’s verdict for a 70-year-old retired machine operator and supervisor who developed color cancer as a result of working with CertainTeed asbestos cement pipe. During the trial internal company documents surfaced that proved that CertainTeed executives knew from the mid-1960s that asbestos could cause cancer. CertainTeed did not stop using asbestos until 1985.

CertainTeed manufactured many asbestos-containing products from the 1930s until 1985, including:

  • Asbestos Cement Sheet
  • Asbestos Roof Coating
  • Asbestos Cement Pipe
  • Certainteed Sealing Cement
  • Certainteed Plastic Cement
  • Certainteed Cold Process Cement
  • Certainteed Joint Treating Compound
