Synkoloid Company Artra

The Synkoloid Company manufacturers paints, varnishes, paint and varnish brushes, bituminous derivatives, asphalt, adhesives and sealants, tape, pitch and gilsonite. Synkoloid was established in the early twentieth century in Bayonne, New Jersey, and became a division of the Artra Group in 1975. And in 1981, Artra sold Synkoloid’s assets to Muralo with the condition that Artra would indemnify and hold Muralo harmless from all product liability claims.

Muralo no doubt regretted its decision. As a result of its asset purchase, Muralo became the target of an enormous amount of asbestos related lawsuits.

For decades, many of Synkoloid’s products contained asbestos. Because of its high tensile strength and excellent insulation and fireproofing qualities, asbestos was used countless building products for much of the last century. Although asbestos no doubt improved the fire safety of any product it was used in, it becomes deadly when inhaled or swallowed.

Microscopic asbestos fibers break off easily from their host and can remain suspended in the air for hours of even days. Once the fibers become embedded in the internal organs they are not easily removed by the body’s defenses and over many years and decades, the embedded fibers can cause scarring and irritation, a condition that can lead to a host of asbestos-related diseases such as asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma.

Anyone who worked with Synkoloid asbestos products may have inhaled asbestos and should be considered at risk of mesothelioma and other cancers. Synkaloid and Artra knew for decades that asbestos was dangerous, but did nothing to warn or protect its workers or the public.
