Tomorrow marks 8 years since the tragedy of 9/11. A day we will remember victims and the heroes that have passed since that day. On Sunday, Susan Feldman of the New York Post wrote about the rising number of rescue and recovery workers deaths -
"Toll still climbing for 9/11 workers". She reports current data shows over 800 WTC rescue and recovery workers have passed away since 9/11. And she states that approximately 270 of these deaths are a result of cancer. We know that asbestos was a component of the toxic dust that filled the area after the towers collapsed. What we don't know is how many deaths will be attributable to asbestos-related diseases now and in the future. Due to the latency period of mesothelioma (cancer associated with
asbestos exposure) and other asbestos-related diseases we can speculate that the death count will continue to rise into the future. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and families affected now and in the future by this terrible tragedy. It's a sad reminder that asbestos continues to be an issue in the U.S. and worldwide. I hope we use this day as an opportunity not only to remember those lost, but to also increase awareness about the dangers of asbestos.
