Working around the subjects of mesothelioma and asbestos can be a drag sometimes. The outlook for those diagnosed is often grim — usually with only months to live — and many a gut-wrenching story is passed around the office from patients and family members alike.
Occasionally, though, we come across a story like the one below.
With our offices here in the Boston area, we are surrounded by some of the best doctors and hospitals in the world, and often hear tales of amazing medical feats in the news.
But the story of 34 year-old Karen Grant’s battle with mesothelioma is one of the most amazing stories we have come across in awhile. Diagnosed at the incredibly early age of 29, Grant was given only a few months to live.
But with the help of a renowned doctor specializing in mesothelioma treatment — Dr. David Sugarbaker of Brigham & Women’s Hospital here in Boston — Grant went through two major surgeries to remove the tumors lining her lungs and submitted to a very aggressive treatment program.
“A lot of other people have benefited because of what we saw in her because a lot of people would have given up,” Sugarbaker said. “We offered her a very aggressive approach that a lot of patients could have said no thank you to, but not Karen.”
This story is one that inspired many of us here at Sokolove Law, and we would like to congratulate Grant and Dr. Sugarbaker for their amazing accomplishment.
You can read the rest of the story and watch a video on Karen and Dr. Sugarbaker here.

Thanks for stopping by, Heather! I remember us chatting about your “all clear” check-up in Boston & thought of you when this article came through. It’s truly inspiring to see how contagious hope & strength can be.

Mesothelioma survival rate has increased recently as there has been the emergence of new interventions to fight the disease. Tests that aid early diagnoses have been developed so that now it is easier to identify the disease before it has does irreversible damage to the body.
