Fort Bliss Military Housing Undergoes Asbestos Removal

A string of cold temperatures in the South has led to ruptured waterlines in military homes located at Fort Bliss in Texas.  Some of the freeze affected homes are in the South Main Post neighborhood and, upon inspection, repair workers discovered that the waterlines were surrounded by asbestos insulation.  There are 146 homes in the neighborhood, all containing asbestos insulation, but only 92 will need immediate asbestos abatement.

Asbestos is known to cause major health problems, including mesothelioma and lung cancer, when its tiny fibers are inhaled.  Before public awareness concerning the dangers of asbestos exposure and its potential health hazards, the material was added to various building materials, including asbestos insulation, for its resistance to fire, heat, friction, electrical, and chemical damage.

Families residing in the homes requiring asbestos removal have been moved to other housing or placed in hotels for the remainder of the repairs.  The projects include fixing ruptured waterlines, replacing damaged asbestos insulation, and sealing off any undamaged asbestos insulation that will remain.   Air quality tests will be completed to make certain that the homes are free of asbestos and safe for the return of families.
