An asbestos removal project has begun at the Gifford Gardens Apartment Complex located in Gifford, Florida. A November 16th vote approved the demolition of the vacant 55-unit complex which has recently turned into a center for criminal activity. The first step in the demolition has begun with necessary asbestos removal.

Asbestos is a mineral that, for decades, was used in numerous building products before the public learned of its hazardous health effects which include diseases like mesothelioma and lung cancer. The asbestos at the Gifford Gardens apartments is located in ceiling plaster and is acting as a fire retardant. Asbestos use in construction materials was so common because of its unique resistance to heat, friction, electrical, and chemical damage.

The asbestos removal at the complex will adhere to safety guidelines designed to prevent any workers or neighbors from potential asbestos exposure. The asbestos abatement team from All Phase Solutions have worked to enclose the work area with plastic sheeting and built a shower at the entrance of the site for workers to clean off and change clothes before leaving.  This will eliminate any chance for asbestos fibers to leave the work enclosure. Additionally, all of the workers will be equipped with breathing filters when working around the asbestos.
