Asbestos Side Effects

The dangers of asbestos are well known. Asbestos side effects can cause:

  • Asbestosis—a chronic lung disorder that can cause shortness of breath, coughing, and permanent lung damage
  • Lung cancer
  • Mesothelioma—a rare cancer of the membranes lining the chest and abdomen
  • Other cancers in the throat, gastrointestinal tract, and kidneys

These asbestos side effects can develop 10-40 years after exposure. Heavier and longer exposure to asbestos may increase a person's risk of experiencing one or more of these conditions.

Some symptoms that may indicate you are experiencing asbestos side effects are:

  • Shortness of breath
  • A cough or a change in cough pattern
  • Blood in fluid coughed up from the lungs
  • Pain in the chest or abdomen
  • Difficulty in swallowing or prolonged hoarseness
  • Significant weight loss

For many years, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has been issuing revised regulations to protect workers from asbestos side effects and dangers in the workplace. You may also want to take steps to protect yourself and your family members from possible asbestos side effects caused by asbestos materials in your home.

If you experience any of the symptoms and have worked in a job where you may have been exposed to asbestos, you may want to contact a mesothelioma lawyer today.
