EPA presents data on investigation of Pennsylvania asbestos site
July 27th, 2010 - At a meeting with the Community Advisory Group, officials with the Environmental Protection Agency presented their findings from an investigation of the BoRit asbestos site, located in Ambler, Pennsylvania.
The remedial investigation, which is intended to examine site conditions and review potential solutions to on-site contaminants, was begun after the BoRit location was placed on the EPA's Superfund National Priorities List last spring, according to the Reporter Online.
"The purpose is to find out what's out there, where it is, where it may be going, what threats it might pose - what is the nature and extent of the disposed waste at the BoRit site," Stacie Pratt, the EPA's remedial project manager, told the news source.
During the first phase of the investigation, which occurred between November 2009 and January 2010, crews found asbestos-containing materials and asbestos mixed with soil in various areas on the site.
Officials are currently developing a second phase of the project, which they expect to involve more in-depth and expanded testing for asbestos contamination.
Asbestos exposure has been linked to potentially fatal lung diseases such as asbestosis and mesothelioma. In the U.S. more than 2,000 new cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed each year, says the National Cancer Institute.
Mesothelioma and asbestosis are both deadly illnesses that are caused primarily by prolonged exposure to asbestos fibers.
