Landmark theater has Facebook fans, but faces costly demolition
July 16th, 2010 - Residents of the Salt Lake City area have launched a Facebook campaign to save a landmark theater complex, but the Cinedome 70 in nearby Riverdale would cost more to renovate than demolish.
The building, considered cutting-edge when it opened, doesn't meet city codes, contains asbestos throughout the structure and is considered a blighted property, Riverdale community development administrator Randy Daly told the Salt Lake City Tribune.
With distinctive domed construction, the 3.6-acre site includes two theaters with 70-foot curved screens, surround sound, stadium seating and 70-millimeter film projectors. Built in 1970 when asbestos was still commonly used in construction, a costly abatement program would have to be undertaken to clean out the hazardous mineral, which is linked to diseases such as lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis.
The newspaper reported that a local developer, the Larry H. Miller Group, holds the lease on the property and wants to buy it to build a car dealership. The building has been empty since 2001.
Meanwhile, the Facebook effort has gathered the support of more than 5,000 members recently. "I wanted to make sure the Cinedome didn't go out quietly, if it went out at all," said Allen Glines, an Ogden resident who started the online campaign called "Save Cinedome 70."
